Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an 18 year old living with his parents, 6 siblings, and 5 slaves on their farm at Graham in Alamance County, NC. He enlisted there on 8 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 15 May in Garysburg, NC. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861. He was appointed 3rd Corporal on 9 December 1861 and promoted to First Sergeant on 24 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty about January 1863 but was killed at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863.

His father Jacob filed a claim for his final pay of $275.27 in December 1863.
