Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 21 year old farm laborer living with his parents and older sister on their farm at Scotland Neck in Halifax County, NC. He gave his occupation as carpenter when he enlisted in Tarboro, NC on 8 May 1861, and he mustered as a Private in Company G of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry at Garysburg, NC on 16 May. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in his right side, his humerus (upper arm bone) and scapula (shoulder blade) broken, in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 3 October in Frederick, MD, then at Fort McHenry in Baltimore to 14 October, when he was sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 23 October and furloughed home on 31 October 1862. He was absent, wounded, to about 16 July 1863, when he was returned to duty from a hospital in Farmville, VA. He was captured near Appomattox Court House, VA on 3 April 1865 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD to 23 June 1865.

After the War

By 1880 he was a farmer at Roseneath in Halifax County, NC. In 1900 he was farming in Wilson County, NC.

His service from Moore's Roster 1 and his Compiled Service Records,2 online from fold3. Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census of 1860, 1880, and 1900. His gravesite is on Findagrave; his stone has his birth as 24 November 1842, which doesn't match any other documentation.

He married Mary F. Wiggins (1847-1904) in May 1872 and they had 6 children.
