Before Sharpsburg
A 21 year old farmer, he enlisted at Yanceyville, NC on 29 April 1861 and mustered in Raleigh as a Private in Company A of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 18 May. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was captured at Middletown, MD on 12 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware, then transferred to Aikens' Landing, VA on 2 October for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November, and returned to duty. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and absent in hospitals to about November 1863. He was ill and home on furlough in April and May 1864. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 20 March 1865 with pneumonia and captured there on 3 April 1865. He was sent to Newport News, VA on 23 April and took an oath of allegiance to the United States there on 30 June 1865 and was released.
