Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 24 year old mechanic at Tarboro in Edgecombe County, NC. Giving his occupation as carpenter, he enlisted there on 8 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company G of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 16 May in Garysburg, NC. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861. He was wounded and captured at Williamsburg, VA on 5 May 1862, a prisoner in Washington, DC to 4 August, then sent to James River, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged to return to duty the next day at Aikens' Landing, VA.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty in about January 1863. He was wounded yet again, at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July, returned to duty about September 1863, and served with his company to their surrender and parole at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farm worker at Brattlesboro and Whitaker in Edgecombe County.
