Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 30 year old farm worker living with 2 sons, brother-in-law John W Justice and wife Nancy, and 5 slaves on the Justice farm at Lawsonville in Rockingham County, NC. He enlisted there on 30 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company K of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 3 June in Suffolk, VA. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Middletown, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged in 10 November and returned to duty in about January 1863. He was mortally wounded and captured at Gettysburg, PA in 3 July 1863, his leg was amputated at the knee, but he died there on 12 July 1863.
