Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 15 year old living with his parents, 2 siblings, and 7 slaves on their farm at Lawsonville in Rockingham County, NC. He gave his age as 18 when he enlisted there on 4 August 1862 and he mustered as a Private in Company K of the 13th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner in Fort Delaware until 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He returned to his company in about January 1863 and was killed in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863.
