Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 16 year old farmer living with his widowed mother Sarah, 4 siblings, and at least 16 slaves (he owned one) at Tarboro in Edgecombe County, NC. He enlisted there on 11 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company G of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 31 August. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862 and captured near Boonsboro, MD the next day.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner in Fort Delaware until 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and returned to duty in about January 1863. He was captured again, at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and sent back to Fort Delaware. He transferred to Point Lookout, MD in October 1863, and to Boulware's Wharf, VA in February 1865 for exchange.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1900 he was a lumber merchant and farmer in Edgecombe County.
