Before Sharpsburg

An 18 year old farmer from Rockingham County, NC, he enlisted in Wentworth, NC on 13 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 18 May in Garysburg, NC. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and captured nearby the next day.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was transferred to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and returned to duty in about January 1863. He was listed as a deserter from Culpeper, VA on 19 June, but was captured at or near Gettysburg, PA on 4 July and again a prisoner at Fort Delaware until he was transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 15 October 1863. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released on 4 May 1865.
