Before Sharpsburg

A 28 year old farmer from Person County, NC, he enlisted in Leasburg, NC on 30 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 31 August. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was captured near Williamsport, MD on 15 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was transferred to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and returned to duty in about January 1863. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and was back with his company in July. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

In 1870 he was a farmer living with his parents and 5 siblings at Cunningham in Person County, NC but by 1900 was farming his own place near Danville, VA.
