Before Sharpsburg
Going by Julius, in 1860 he was a 19 year old farm worker living with his parents and 4 siblings on their small place near Pleasantville in Rockingham County, NC. He enlisted in Wentworth, NC on 13 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 18 May in Garysburg, NC. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861. He was appointed 3rd Corporal on 12 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was captured near Williamsport, MD on 16 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was held at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was transferred to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and returned to duty in about January 1863. He was 2nd Corporal by August 1863 and promoted to 4th Sergeant on 1 September 1864. He was captured again, at Petersburg, VA on 2 April 1865 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until he took an oath of allegiance and was released on 20 June 1865.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer at Madison/New Bethel in Rockingham County, NC. He retired by 1920 and lived with 3 of his children in New Bethel.
