Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old wagon maker living with his mother Artelia, 4 younger siblings, and 5 slaves on their farm at Graham in Alamance County, NC. Giving his occupation as blacksmith, he enlisted there on 8 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 15 May in Garysburg, NC. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, mortally, at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and died of infection at the Camp Winder hospital in Richmond, VA on 13 June 1863.
