Elijah Masten O'Brien

Before Sharpsburg

Son of miller Sydney O'Briant/O'Brien, in 1860 he was an 18 year old farmer living with his parents, brother James, and 6 slaves at Bushy Fork in Person County, NC. He enlisted at Leasburg, NC on 1 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 31 August. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861. He was elected 3rd Corporal on 26 April 1862 during the army reorganization.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA and furloughed on 27 October. He returned to his company on 3 September 1863, was promoted to 4th Sergeant on 26 December 1863, and was surrendered and paroled with them at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer at Roxboro in Person County, NC.
