Before Sharpsburg

Going by Neely, in 1860 he was a 23 year old farmer near his parents' place at Mocksville in Davie County, NC. He enlisted there on 6 April 1861 and mustered as a Musician in Company F of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 15 May in Garysburg, NC. He was appointed Principal Musician on 1 June 1861. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 20 September and returned to his company in about November 1862. He was appointed First Sergeant on 1 May 1864 and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

In 1870 he was again a farmer in Davie County, but by 1880 and to at least 1900 was farming in Dyer County, TN.
