25 years old, giving his home as Indiana, he enlisted on 29 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company A of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was listed as a deserter on 14 September and captured at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He requested not to be returned to his unit, took an oath of allegiance to the United States at Sharpsburg on 27 September 1862, and was released - "permitted to proceed to and remain in any of the loyal States." There is no later military record.
