Before Sharpsburg
A 22 year old laborer, he enlisted in Wentworth, NC on 13 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 18 May in Garysburg, NC. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861. He was elected 2nd Sergeant on 26 April 1862 during the army reorganization and promoted to First Sergeant on 12 August.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was paroled at Keedysville, MD on 19 September and returned to his company in about November 1862. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 6 December (to date from 18 November) 1862 and promoted to First Lieutenant on 10 July 1863. He was ill in a Danville, VA hospital in July and August 1863 and resigned his commission on 30 March 1864; his Colonel noted of him that "this officer is inefficient and resigns that his place may be filled by a more efficient one."
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1920, then age 81, he was a farmer near Madison in Rockingham County, NC.
