Before Sharpsburg

A 23 year old laborer from Madison, Rockingham County, NC, he enlisted in Wentworth, NC on 10 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company H of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry on 18 May in Garysburg, NC. The regiment was re-designated the 13th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October, when he was sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and returned to his company in about January 1863. He was wounded by a gunshot to his right thigh at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May and was back with his company by July 1863. He was surrendered and paroled with them at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
