Before Antietam
He enlisted on 13 January 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company C, 19th Indiana Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot to his right arm in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862. His arm was amputated the same day, with further surgery on 18 September.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to the US Army General Hospital at Camp A in Frederick, MD on 1 November and was discharged there for disability on 11 December 1862. He began receiving a pension for disability in February 1863.
After the War
In 1880 he was a "government pensioner" in Randolph County, IN.

He married Mary Jane McKew (1842-1872) in June 1864 and they had 6 children. He married again, Martha Barr (1850-1942) in March 1874 and they had 2 more. He married, thirdly, Eliza Ann May (1852-1915) in about 1878 and they had 2 children.
