In 1860 he was an 18 year old day laborer living with merchant Samuel Hiatt and his family at Lynn in Randolph County, IN. He enlisted and mustered on 29 July 1861 as a Private in Company C, 19th Indiana Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
