In 1860 he was an 18 year old living with his parents and 8 younger siblings on their farm at Farmland in Randolph County, IN. He enlisted and mustered on 29 July 1861 as a Private in Company C, 19th Indiana Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
