Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 16 year old living with Henry Fisher and family on their farm at Newport in Vermillion County, IN. He enlisted and mustered on 7 June 1861 as a Private in Company I, 14th Indiana Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was discharged for disability on 20 December 1862. He enlisted again and mustered on 25 March 1864 as a Private in Company F, 40th Indiana Infantry. He was again discharged for disability on 20 May 1865.
After the War
By 1880 he was a farmer in Boone County, IN but by 1900 was farming in Garfield County in the Oklahoma Territory (statehood in 1907). A 1907 pension document notes he had lost his right leg.
