Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 20 year old farm worker living with his parents and 5 siblings on their farm near Salem in Washington County, IN. He enlisted and mustered on 7 June 1861 as a Private in Company H, 14th Indiana Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD on 28 September and was discharged there for disability on 2 April 1863.
He began receiving a disability pension in June 1863 but helped recruit a company of troops in Owen County (with Harrison Woodsmall) and enrolled again for service, was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Company G, 115th Indiana Infantry on 7 July 1863, and mustered for a 6-month term with them on 17 July. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 14 August and mustered out with the regiment on 10 February 1864 in Indianapolis.
After the War
By 1870 he was a cooper at Gosport in Owen County, IN.
