Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 21 year old farm worker living with his father and 3 siblings on their farm near Newberry in Greene County, IN. He enlisted and mustered on 7 June 1861 as a Private in Company D, 14th Indiana Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the shoulder in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was discharged on 29 October 1862 to join the Regular US Army and had enlisted at Knoxville, MD on 21 October as a Private in Company C of the 6th United States Cavalry. He was discharged on 6 June 1864 at the end of his original term of enlistment.
After the War
By 1875 he was a farmer in San Francisco, CA and in 1880 he was a milker in San Mateo County, CA. By 1900 he was back at Newberry in Greene County, IN, a farmer there, and he'd retired in Newberry by 1910.
