In 1860 he was an 18 year old living with his parents and 4 siblings on their farm in Greene County, IN. He enlisted and mustered on 7 June 1861 as a Private in Company D, 14th Indiana Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the shoulder in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged for disability in April 1864.
