Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his widowed mother Mary and 3 siblings at Princeton in Gibson County, IN. He enlisted and mustered on 7 June 1861 as a Private in Company A, 14th Indiana Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the shoulder in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged to join the regular US Army and enlisted on 22 October 1862 at Bolivar near Harpers Ferry, VA as a Private in Battery C of the 4th United States Artillery. He reenlisted at Brandy Station, VA on 13 February 1864 and was discharged at Ft. Whipple (later Ft. Myer), VA on 13 February 1867, then the battery's Bugler.

After the War

By 1870 he was a wood turner back at Princeton in Gibson County, IN, but in 1880 was a wood turner at Petersburg in Pike County, IN. He began receiving a US pension for disability in October 1891.
