Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his parents and 11 siblings on their farm at Rockville in Parke County, IN. He enlisted and mustered on 7 June 1861 as a Private in Company I, 14th Indiana Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged to enroll in the regular US Army, and enlisted in Pleasant Valley, MD on 24 October 1862 as a Private in Battery G, 4th United States Artillery. He reenlisted on 5 February 1864 at Bridgeport, AL but deserted his unit on 9 March 1865.
