Before Antietam
From Putnam County, IN, he enlisted and mustered on 7 June 1861 as a Private in Company D, 14th Indiana Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the arm and hand in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was discharged for disability on 20 March 1863 and began receiving a US pension for disability in July 1863. He enlisted again, as a Private in Company K, 15th West Virginia Infantry on 24 December 1863 and he mustered out with them on 27 July 1865.
After the War
He went west to join other members of his family in Iowa and by 1870 was a laborer at Middletown in Des Moines County, IA. By 1880 he was a stone mason at Centerville in Appanoose County, IA. In 1900 he was an ore miner living alone in Clear Creek County, CO and in 1910 was working odd jobs and living with his cousin Mary Bowman and family in Coffey County, KS.
