Before Sharpsburg

Son of a prosperous merchant, from La Grange in Troup County, he enlisted at about age 23 at Decatur in De Kalb County, GA and mustered as First Sergeant of Company C, Cobb's Legion Infantry on 5 August 1861. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant to date from 18 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the chest and captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died in US 6th Army Corps field hospital at Burkittsville, MD on 27 September 1862.
