In 1860 he was a 15 year old living with his parents, 7 siblings, an 18 slaves on their farm at Oxford in Newton County, GA. Giving his age as 17, he enlisted at Covington in Newton County, GA and mustered as 3rd Corporal of Company A, Cobb's Legion Infantry on 5 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and left behind, with no later Confederate record, and no record he was captured by Federal troops. It is likely he died on the field.
