Before Sharpsburg
Son of a master marble cutter, in 1860 he was a 16 year old living with his parents and 13 siblings at Madison in Morgan County, GA. He enlisted there on 15 May 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company G, Cobb's Legion Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded, bruised in the back by a gunshot in action at Crampton's Gap on 14 September and captured.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Alexandria, VA on 29 September and sent on to Washington, DSC on 4 October. He was sent to Aikens' Landing, VA on 2 November for exchange, and was admitted to Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond on 4 November. He returned to duty on 29 November 1862. He was captured again, at Falling Waters, MD on 14 July 1863 and in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC by 23 July. He was transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 8 August and released on exchange on 3 March 1864. He was with his company to at least November 1864, the last record in his military file.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer at Madison/Hello in Morgan County, GA. He had retired there by 1920.
