Before Sharpsburg
His father died in 1839 when Benjamin was only a year old. In 1860 he was a 22 year old living with his step-father, sugar planter R.L. Sparks, mother, sister, 3 half-siblings, and 18 slaves on their plantation at Attakapas Canal in Assumption Parish, LA. Giving his occupation as clerk, he enrolled on 19 June 1861 and was appointed Junior 2nd Lieutenant of Company K, 8th Louisiana Infantry at Camp Moore, LA. He was 2nd Lieutenant by March 1862 and was promoted to First Lieutenant on 27 June.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
