Before Sharpsburg

Only son of wheelwright William L Born, in 1860 he was an 18 year old student living with his parents and 4 sisters at Lithonia in DeKalb County, GA. He enlisted on 1 August 1861 and mustered at Decatur, GA on 5 August as a Private in Company C, Cobb's Legion Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware, sent to Aikens Landing, VA on 2 October, and formally exchanged there on 10 November 1862. He was appointed 2nd Sergeant, date not given, and at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863

Sergt. J L Born, Co C, distinguished himself by the capture and preservation of a stand of the enemy's colors.
He was wounded by a gunshot to his left shoulder at Knoxville, TN on 29 November 1863 and captured. He was treated in the US 9th Corps hospital at Knoxville, then exchanged (date not found). He was appointed First Sergeant of his company by July 1864 and was captured again, on 6 April 1865 at Sailor's Creek near Farmville, VA. He was released after he took an oath of allegiance to the United States at Newport News, VA on 25 June 1865.

After the War

By 1870 he was back in DeKalb County and in 1880 and to at least 1900 was a farmer at Lithonia/Decatur, GA.
