Age 18, he enlisted on 8 August 1861 and mustered at Richmond, VA on 12 August as a Private in Company E, Cobb's Legion Infantry. He was appointed 2nd Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 7 October and was furloughed home to Greene County, GA from 8 October to 15 December 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant on 10 June 1863 with no military record after a pay receipt of 26 October 1863.
