In 1860 he was a 20 year old farmer living with his parents and 9 siblings on their farm at Athens in Clarke County, GA. He enlisted in Athens on 5 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, Cobb's Legion Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His father William filed for his final pay in March 1863.
