Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old farmer living with his parents, 8 siblings, and 4 slaves on their prosperous place in Carroll County, GA. He enlisted in Carrollton, GA on 15 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company F, Cobb's Legion Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by as many as 6 gunshots to his leg, right elbow/arm, and shoulder in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and captured.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the US 6th Corps field hospital in Burkittsville, MD, then at the US Army General Hospital at Camp A in Frederick, MD from 16 to 28 November. He was sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore, where he was paroled, and on to Fortress Monroe, VA. He was in a hospital in Petersburg, VA in December, suffering from "six wounds" and "loss use of right arm," and was discharged there for disability on 19 December 1862. He died of wounds at home in Carrollton, GA on 16 January 1863.
