Before Sharpsburg

Age 20, he enlisted in Waynesboro in Burke County, GA on 12 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E, Cobb's Legion Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by gunshots to his right arm, left hand, groin, and left leg in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a field hospital in Burkittsville, MD to about 18 November, then at US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD. He was sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore on 24 December, then on to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange on 29 December 1862. He was admitted to a hospital in Petersburg, VA on 3 January 1863 and furloughed home for 60 days on 26 January. He probably never rejoined his company and was retired to the Invalid Corps on 3 May 1864.

After the War

In 1870 he was a mechanic near Waynesboro, GA.
