Before Sharpsburg
Age 24, he enlisted in Athens, GA on 5 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, Cobb's Legion Infantry. He was promoted to First Corporal, date not given.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot to his left leg in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and left behind to be captured.
The rest of the War
His left leg was amputated at the thigh the next day by a US surgeon at the US 6th Corps field hospital in Burkittsville, MD, and he was admitted to US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD on 18 November. He was sent to the US Army hospital on Camden Street in Baltimore then to Fort McHenry on 31 March 1863. He was paroled there on 3 April and sent to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He was furloughed home, disabled.
He applied for a prosthetic leg in Richmond, VA in April 1864 and was in a hospital in Charlottesville, VA in June 1864, afterward again sent home. He applied for retirement to the Invalid Corps in November 1864, was examined for that purpose in a hospital in Richmond, VA in February 1865, and was discharged as retired on 7 March.
