In 1860 he was a 16 year old living with his parents and 2 younger siblings on their farm near Flint Hill in Carroll County, GA. He enlisted and mustered in Carrollton, GA on 15 August 1861 as a Private in Company F, Cobb's Legion Infantry. He was promoted to First Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

Initially listed as missing, he was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His father Thomas filed a claim for his final pay in February 1863.
