Before Sharpsburg

Son of a wealthy planter, in 1860 he was an 18 year old living with his parents, 5 siblings, and 42 slaves in Burke County, GA. He enrolled in Waynesboro, GA on 1 August 1861 and mustered in Richmond, VA on 5 August as 2nd Lieutenant of Company E, Cobb's Legion Infantry. He was promoted to First Lieutenant by February 1862 and to Captain on 26 August.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to the right side of his head and captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 "where [the] bullet struck the buckle on his hat, splitting it into one half entering his head."

The rest of the War

He was treated at the US 6th Army Corps field hospital in Burkittsville, MD and signed a parole on 20 October. He was sent from Fort McHenry in Baltimore to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange on 8 December and was admitted to a hospital in Petersburg, VA on 12 December 1862. He was furloughed home the next week and resigned his commission due to disability from his wound on 13 April 1863, his brain at that time "without bony covering."

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer in Burke County, GA.

He married Laura E Rogers (1847-1905) in March 1864 and they had 8 children; only the 3 youngest survived him.
