Before Sharpsburg
Son of a wealthy lawyer, state legislator, and judge John Julius Floyd (1809-1883), in 1860 he was a 20 year old farmer living with his parents, 2 siblings, and 79 slaves in Covington, Newton County, GA. He enrolled there on 1 August 1861 and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant of Company B, Cobb's Legion Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was sent from Fort Delaware to Aikens Landing, VA on 2 October and formally exchanged there on 10 November. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital then furloughed home on 15 October 1862. He was wounded in the leg near Fredericksburg, VA in May 1863 and was promoted to First Lieutenant on 3 July. He was acting Adjutant in November and Major Conyers, then commanding the Battalion, recommended him for promotion to Quartermaster in April 1864, but there was no action on that.
He served with his company until he was captured again, at Sailor's Creek, VA on 6 April 1865. He was held briefly in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC then sent to Johnson's Island near Sandusky, OH. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States there on 18 June and was released.
After the War
By 1870 he was a farmer near Bainbridge in Decatur County, GA.
