Confederate (CSV)

Private

John H. Garrison

(1835 - 1864)

Home State: Texas

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: Cobb's (GA) Legion, Infantry Battalion

Before Sharpsburg

He went to Rusk County, TX in 1854. In 1860 he was a 23 year old farmer with a place near Henderson in Rusk County, TX, but he returned to his mother's home in Carroll County, GA in early 1861 with his young daughter after the death of his wife and son. He enlisted in Bowdon, GA on 30 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, Cobb's Legion Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action in Maryland, probably at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on furlough by November with no later record with the Legion. He enlisted again, on 1 January 1863 in Henderson, TX as a Private in Company C, 14th Texas (Johnson's) Cavalry, and was detailed for duty with the Regimental Quartermaster, who was, not coincidentally, his brother Zadok. He was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant by April 1864 and was killed by artillery in Atlanta, GA during the Federal siege on 19 August 1864. He had

gone to a private home in the city to have some clothing made for himself and his brother, Captain Zed Garrison; He was just in the act of leaving when the shell fell in the house, and exploded in the adjoining room, killing a little boy, wounding another, and two ladies, a fragment of the shell passing through the partition wall, striking the deceased on the thigh, mashing it to pieces, and cutting the large artery, causing him to bleed to death, before medical aid could reach him. His sufferings are described as being intense, by his brother and friends, who reached him only about thirty minutes before he expired, but using the language of his brother, he bore up under them like a man, and true patriot soldier. He lived only about one hour and a half after receiving the wound.
