In 1860 he was a 20 year old living with his parents, brother Byron, and 2 slaves on their farm in the Cross Keys district, DeKalb County, GA. He enlisted in Decatur, GA on 5 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company C, Cobb's Legion Infantry Battalion.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His father Starling filed a claim for his final pay in March 1863.
