Age 21, he enlisted on 29 July 1861 in Madison, GA and mustered as a Private in Company G, Cobb's Legion Infantry Battalion on 2 August.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his abdomen and right hip in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was home on furlough to at least the end of 1862. He was back in a hospital in Richmond, VA on 30 May 1864 due to his Maryland wound, served as a nurse there, then returned to his company in September. He was again in a hospital in November 1864 with no later military record.
