Before Sharpsburg

Son of a Pennsylvania-born harness maker, in 1860 he was a 16 year old laborer living with his parents and 3 siblings near Bascobal in Jackson County, GA. He enlisted in Athens, GA on 5 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, Cobb's Legion Infantry Battalion.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by a gunshot in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and captured.

The rest of the War

He died in the US 6th Army Corps field hospital at Burkittsville, MD on 5 November 1862, and was buried there.

His father Edward filed a claim for his final pay of $142.83 in May 1863 which was paid in October of that year.
