Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 21 year old laborer living with his widowed mother Sarah, a seamstress, and 7 younger siblings in Richmond County, GA. He enlisted in Waynesboro, GA on 1 August 1861 and mustered on 8 August in Richmond, VA as a Private in Company E, Cobb's Legion Infantry Battalion.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His widow Ruthie filed a claim for his final pay in November 1862 which was finally paid in October 1864. She gave his name as Francis J Huffman.
