Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a prosperous 39 year old physician with 6 slaves at Newnan in Coweta County, GA. He enrolled on 1 August 1861 in Decatur, GA and mustered on 5 August as 2nd Lieutenant of Company C of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion. He was elected First Lieutenant on 6 November 1861 and promoted to Captain on 18 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his jaw in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the US 6th Army Corps field hospital in Burkittsville, MD then sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore. He was formally exchanged at Aikens' Landing, VA on 8 November 1862. He resigned his commission due to disability from his wound on 8 May 1863 - he could not chew and was limited to a liquid diet.

After the War

By 1880 he was a physician at Cedartown in Polk County, GA.
