Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was an 18 year old farm worker living with his parents and 4 siblings on their farm near Indian Spring in Butts County, GA. He enlisted in Bowdon, GA on 30 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the thigh and hip, probably in action at Crampton's Gap on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was on wounded furlough home into December 1862 with no later record with the Legion.
He transferred to Company D of the 3rd Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters by May 1863 and was with them to July 1864, when he was wounded by a piece of shell to his left leg, place not given. He was admitted to the Jackson Hospital in Richmond, VA on 29 July and furloughed home for 30 days on 3 August. He was again briefly in Jackson Hospital in October 1864, and returned to duty with no later military record.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer in Carroll County, GA. By 1920 he was retired and living with his son Abner and family in Appling County, GA. In 1930 he was at Walnut Grove in Etowah County, AL with his son Henry and family.

He went by Sterling at the 1870 and 1880 US Census and changed the spelling of his surnname to McCright by 1920.
He married Cynthia Anne Roberts (1850-1924) in 1868 and they had 6 children.
