Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old living with his father and 9 siblings on their farm near Lithonia in DeKalb County, GA. He enlisted in Decatur, GA on 1 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company C of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his right leg just above the knee in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and captured.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the US 6th Army Corps field hospital in Burkittsville, MD and at US Army General Hospital #5 in Fredrick, MD to 28 November, then was sent to the Camden Street Hospital in Baltimore. He was transferred to Fort McHenry on 31 March 1863, where he was paroled and sent on to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange on 3 April 1863. He was admitted to a hospital in Petersburg, VA on 6 April and furloughed home for 60 days on 21 April 1863.

By January 1864 and to at least August that year he was on detached duty as a Yard Master in Atlanta, GA. In September 1864 he received pay in Macon, GA while on detail there as a wagon master, the latest record in his military file with the Legion.

After the War

In 1870 he was a farm worker at Pinckneyville in Gwinnett County, GA but by 1880 and to at least 1900 he farmed his own place back at Lithonia, GA. In 1910 he was farming with his daughter Clandisa Chloe (McArthur) and her family in Lithonia.
