Samuel Wylie Crawford

In 1851 he was appointed assistant surgeon in the US Army on frontier duty. In April 1861 he commanded a battery at Fort Sumter, and was Major in the 13th United States Infantry. In April 1862 he was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers and commanded the 1st Brigade/1st Division in the Shenandoah Valley campaign and at Cedar Mountain.

In command of the 1st Brigade in the First Division of Brigadier General Williams' Twelfth (XII) Army Corps, he took over the Division when Brigadier General Williams relieved the wounded MGen Mansfield in command of the Corps. Crawford was himself wounded and relieved by Brigadier General G. Gordon.

He commanded the PA Reserve Corps in the Washington defenses and when they became the 3rd Division/V Corps he led them at Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Five Forks.

He continued his career Army service and retired in 1873.
