Before Sharpsburg

Age 21, he enlisted on 1 August 1861 in Waynesboro, GA and mustered in Richmond, VA on 8 August as a Private in Company E of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 30 September and was home on furlough from 30 November to 1 March 1863, then again from 14 March to 12 May. He was home on furlough in June 1864 and to at least August, and it's not clear if he ever rejoined his unit. There is no later record with the Legion in his file.

After the War

In 1880 he was a laborer in Walton County, GA.

His service from his Compiled Service Records,1 online from fold3. Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census of 1880. His gravesite is on Findagrave, as Aaron Ardis Powell; I have not found documentation for his middle name. His daughter Sarah Ann Powell Robinson (1860-1934) of Homer, LA obtained a US government headstone for him in October 1931.

He married Margaret Elizabeth Lowry (1844-1891) and they had 6 children between 1860 and 1880.
