Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 28 year old farmer at Lithonia in DeKalb County, GA. He enlisted on 1 August 1861 in Decatur, GA and mustered on 5 August as a Private in Company C of the Infantry Battalion, Cobb's Legion. He was appointed 4th Corporal in 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was home on furlough to at least January 1863 and does not appear to have ever returned to his company "being unfit for field service." He was on duty at Camp Winder hospital in Richmond, VA hospital as an attendant and cook from April to July 1863 and a patient in a Richmond hospital in August. From 7 September 1863 to at least 6 May 1864 he was detailed on enrolling duty at Camp Randolph (Camp of Instruction #2) in Decatur, GA. There is no later military record with the Legion.
